I'm planning a second storey extension on top of an existing ground floor extension. Ideally this bedroom would be accessed by a second set of stairs at the back of the house. So if you went up the main stairs you wouldn't be able to get into the new bedroom - the only access would be via the new stairs at the back of the house which would go directly into the room.

Is there a maximum angle for internal stairs? There's not much room at the back and the stairs may have to be quite steep.

Obviously this will all come out in the planning permission and building regs but I wondered if anyone knew the answer?

The maximum rise should be 220mm and the minimum going is to be 220mm but the maximum pitch for a private stair should be no more than 42 degrees.

Don't forget that this stairway will also be the only means of escape in relation to fire. You'll need to be careful about the width of the stairs as well. Your BCO and or your builder will advise.

Apropos of nothing will the foundatsions of the existing single storey extension be suitable for a second storey on top? If not you will probably have to tear down the first one and build from scratch.
