MDF fire surround - safety spec

Hi,
Hope this is the right forum to be asking this on, but I am trying to cover up some unsightly brickwork in my living room and as I am working to a budget I am planning to use MDF. The brickwork also surrounds an existing fire place which I want to fill with an electric fire. Are there any issues with using MDF as the surround to the fireplace with an electric fire pumping out heat? I see that lots of fire surrounds are made with MDF these days, but wondered if there is a minimum panel thickness and/or fireproof coating needed. The extremities of the electric fire would be in close proximity if not direct contact with the edges of the MDF.
Thanks,
Tom
