Brick pier for H beam - Required Dimensions?

I have an outside wall about 278 cm wide, that's going to be removed. An HB will then be put in to support the wall of the first floor, easy.

My builder is telling me that I need to 300mm square piers on either side of the room to support the HB.

My question is do I really need to have such large piers to support the beam? Does the side of the pier relate to the width involved because to me it feels like I'm losing an awful lot of the width!! :?

nix,
If you are removing the complete wall width the you will probably need piers 300x225. Talk to your building inspector and see if he will accept smaller piers.
