Options and Regulations for Outside Garage Electricity Supply

I have a garage that is separate from the house. I would like an electrical supply for lighting and electrical sockets inside the garage. What are the regulations for where I should run the cables? Can I run them overhead or do I need to bury them. Would a temporary link work which I only connect when I need it?
