"Linking" a shed and a greenhouse

by Splinter Magnet » Mon Oct 23, 2023 5:30 pm

Hi.

It's my first post here, still finding my way about the place so please forgive me if I post the wrong thing in the wrong place.

Anyway... I have a greenhouse and a shed... the entrances face each other and are about 8ft apart. If I batten from one structure to the other and cover the gap with, say, clear polycarb panels to give me a sheltered outdoor work area, would the planning peeps regard the whole thing as one structure?

TIA

Hi splinter magnet,
Provided you are not in a conservation area, the shed and greenhouse are in your back garden and you do not propose creating habitable accommodation I don’t think your local authority will be interested.

Thanks for the reply, stoneyboy.

I agree that the LA won't be doing ad-hoc rounds checking on such things, as they're so cash-strapped that they can't afford to run their own office - they're all working from home.

The problem is that my neighbour has joined the Garden Mafia and he is more than happy to get the LA involved if he perceives any opportunity to cause friction. He brought in the planning peeps last year when he claimed that the height of my boundary-fence was 2.2m and hence over the limit without PP. The reality was that for the last 30 years it's been 2.0m high measured my side, but he'd measured it his side where he'd done some digging-out to make a level area for his own shed. Ever since he embarrassed himself by being such a fool he's been itching to find fault where there is none, so I want to be sure that any work that I do is compliant.

Anyway, we're not in a conservation area, the shed and greenhouse are in my back garden and I do not propose creating habitable accommodation (but like all good sheds it does have a comfy chair and a beer-fridge, so I do doze off in there occasionally when hiding from SWMBO).

Regards,
Splinter Magnet

Hi splinter magnet,
Go for it.
If you use screwed construction throughout the worse that could happen is you’ll have to take it apart but I doubt this will be be necessary. Just don’t install a kitchen and bathroom in the shed..
