Updating memory on a Sony Vaio Laptop

by pc6844 » Mon Dec 05, 2011 8:56 pm

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop running on Wndows Xp SP2. The model is PCG-FR415m which i have had for a long time and is an out of date model. I wanted to put a larger amount of memory in than the 512mb it has at the min but specification states that the MAXIMUM amount of memory is 1.0 GB is this the case or can i go beyond that? Many thanks

Hi PC6844

The maximum memory of any system is a factor of the BIOS and software that the motherboard uses to bring the computer live and run before handing over to the Operating System. The maximum figure is hard coded into the motherboard software, you could put more memory in than the 1GB it says is the maximum but you run the fact that the system will not recognise the module at all, or that it may recognise the module but only be able to access 1GB of that module

To make a long story short, it is not worth the money or the risk to try and place more than the stipulated maximum memory into any computer.

as stated above the best thing you can do here is just go for 1 gb as its not worth the risk. dont be fooled into buyin cheap memory ram as they can run quite slow. i have 4gb of value ram and when i bought my corsair ram i replaced it with the same amount and frequency but it was much faster and smoother with the corsair.

Agreed. It would be more hassle and than its worth to upgrade a laptop.
