My easy chair has a wooden scroll effect on the front of both arms and the paint, or stain or lacquer whatever it is, mahogany in colour has worn away at the top. I bought varnish and followed the instructions, rub down, coat with white spirit and allow to dry then varnish. Nothing. Might as well have been using water.

I wiped it all off and came here. Please, what is the answer?
