Water Stain Running Down Chimney Breast After Fitting Floating Shelf

About a week ago I fitted a floating shelf to my daughters chimney breast, but now there are what look like water stains running down from beneath the shelf, could it be the varnish running, its only a small amount at present and seems to dry quickly and then reappear any ideas anyone. thanks
