Stain or paint Buddah statue thats been outside

I imported a wooden Buddah statue (!) made of plum mahogany on a family holiday a number of years ago but having lived outside in the UK weather it required some TLC. So I decided to sand it down and fill gaps using a mahogany coloured wood filler.
As you can see in the picture below the filler colour doesn't match the surrounding wood after applying a mahogany stain. Whilst I don't want to achieve a perfect finish I'm now considering priming and painting the statue even if a stain would be better.
I'd be interested to hear what suggestions and products I should use.
