Hi,

Does anyone know if you can convert a detached garage into a 'granny annex' as my mum calls it?? My mum has a detached house and seperate garage and we are thinking of going halves on her house and converting the garage into a little living space for her - basically one bed, lounge, shower room and kitchen. If we extend the garange back into the garden it can be long enough for it but as it doesn't already have water supply and gas/electricity we were wondering if it could actually be done??

I have seen it done but not really DIY job. Mate of mine lived in one while working away. Granny died not long after it was built so used it as guest house.

yeah, it wouldn't be a diy job but I was just wondering if it could be done as it's detached. I know it's getting the water and gas etc that I was worried about. Prob cost a fortune though so will have to look into it. Thanks

You most certainly can. We have designed the coversions of such garage before for clients. You will require both planning and building requlation approval for the works.

Hope this helps.

LCL,

I am hoping you get this message - I am also thinking of converting my detached garage into a room but do not have any idea as to how to go about it.

Where do I go for information - I'd like to manage/ do as much as I can myself to keep the costs down.

You can get advice for such projects from the local planning office with regarding to planning consent and also from your local authority building control department for the building regs required.

If you enter my name followed by surveyors into a well known search engine, and if you live in Kent, we can help.

Hope this helps
