removing roof supports.

I would like to open up a section of ceiling in my chalet bungalow. The section is in the hall and already has an opening for a staircase. It is the removal of several joists that worries me. How can I tell if they are crucial roof supports? Should I get in a structural engineer?

Thanks for the advice.
I got in touch with two local structural engineers and they gave me wildly different quotes ( £400 for a visit and plans in sufficient detail for a builder to work from,- and £90 for a visit and plans).
How can the price be so different?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I would let the £90 man round to check it out but check his qualifications/experience!
