HOW TO LOWER CEILING CREATING STORAGE SPACE (1ST FLOOR FLAT)

Hi,
We are currently in a old style tenement flat with 3.5m high ceilings. I want to lower the Hall Ceiling to 2.5m thus creating crawl space between the old and the new ceilings where we can store boxes etc.
One of the walls is a load bearing one and the others are stud partition.
Has anyone done this kind of conversion, in fact is it at all common and of course what advice has anyone for doing a job like this.
So in short its not a suspended ceiling I am looking to install it is ceiling which can bear a load.
Many thanks in advance.
Stephen
