Enlarging existing loft access - help!

Hi,

We're planning to fit a loft ladder, which means we have to enlarge the existing loft access hatch, but are not sure what to cut through with?

We have a 1930's end-of-terrace, and the ceiling is plaster backed with a metal mesh-work, visible when in the loft area.

We will also be cutting through two joists, the width is perfect for the new hatch, we just need more length.

Any recommendations on what type of saw to use?
Any precautions we need to take?

Thanks, Rebecca.

hi there the best way is get into loft mark position of new hatch then temp screw 3x2 timbers bridging joists that need cutting frame out new hole before removing timbers .as for the plaster dont have any idea tin snips would do to cut mesh either way your patching plaster sorry
