Enlarging existing loft access - help!

Hi,
We're planning to fit a loft ladder, which means we have to enlarge the existing loft access hatch, but are not sure what to cut through with?
We have a 1930's end-of-terrace, and the ceiling is plaster backed with a metal mesh-work, visible when in the loft area.
We will also be cutting through two joists, the width is perfect for the new hatch, we just need more length.
Any recommendations on what type of saw to use?
Any precautions we need to take?
Thanks, Rebecca.
