how far apart should the bolts be when bolting new joists against old ones in loft conversion

hello there is this not on plans as depends on original joist size new joist size but 400 mm is safe enough

thanks olly, what size should bolts be. by the way my surname is burton as well.

i would suggest using bzp m12 coach bolts or studding. use a large plated washer also. offset the bolts from the center line also to spread the compression which will help to minimise any splitting if the timber moisture content reduces in the new timber.
