Thinking about framing a part of my garage off

by 1dshort » Sun Feb 07, 2010 7:30 pm

We have a 500 Sq ft garage and we're thinking about framing part of it off. We would have french doors off the dining room that would enter into this new room.
The garage sits about 3 feet lower than the 1st floor of our home. My question is based on framing & joists. Installing two framed walls would be easy, but my question is in regards to needing joists to bring the flooring level to the rest of the house. Could I run a girder across the back wall of the garage and then have the joists go out from the girder and attach to the sides of the framing wall? The framing would probably be 2x6 due to the 11 1/2' ceiling height.

Would this be code or am I waaayyy off in my thinking?
