Cast Iron/Wood Mantle Shelf?

We have 2 cast iron fireplaces in our new house which seem to have had the mantle shelves ripped off, for some reason. I can't seem to find cast iron mantle shevles on sale anywhere (hardly surprising when they're cast as a whole, I suppose). Do you think replacing with a wood mantle shlef would be acceptable? Has anyone seen this done? Any recommendations for sourcing wood mantle shelves?
