removing plastic spray on paint coating on outside of house

Hi
Our house dates from around 1860 and at some point, someone in their wisdom decided to get the outside covered in that hideous plasticy spray on paint stuff which means that the walls can't breathe. We have pealed away a small amount and found the wall saturated underneath and so really want to get it all off.
Has anyone got any ideas as to how to do this? In places it seems fairly well stuck on. We are prepared to re do the render underneath if required.
The render underneath is a lime render and we would re do it using lime as we have already done elsewhere on the property.
