Hello all, this is my first visit here but I suspect it will not be the last. I've just bought a traditional Scottish stone built house on two stories, three including the attic conversion carried out by a previous owner. There's a fair bit of work to do but nothing too drastic except for getting a membrane in a couple of the walls where the ground has been built up for roads over the centuries. (It was built in 1740). I'm going to get a specialist company to do the walls, mainly for speed as obviously we don't want to move in until that's completed. Also before we move in I want to lay vinyl covering on the kitchen floor just to warm it up a bit for the kids.
Someone has laid ceramic tiles, which was a mistake as the floor bulges up a little in the centre so some of the tiles have cracked. Now I can guess that the best thing to do would be to get the tiles out of there and start from the concrete but would it be at all practicable to level the grout lines and lay the vinyl on that? I assume that levelling compound wouldn't work because of the slightly raised bulge? Would there be any other solution or am I just in denial about the need to get the tiles out?

Thanks, wb, that looks like just the thing! Any tips on getting some idea what the height of my mid-floor bulge might be?

use a string line and stretch it from 1 end to the other on top of the hump and measure the difference in height across the floor
