I need some advice pertaining to my living room walls. They are panelled with reclaimed barn wood from a family farm about 70 years ago. The wood is much older than that. It is fairly dirty. I have attempted to clean it with a cloth (which instantly turns brown upon contact) but the cloth continues to snag on the wood. I have considered sanding it to smooth it but was concerned it might change the appearance or value of the room. Also, I am uncertain if the walls should be waxed, sealed or coated in some fashion to keep the wood in good condition. It seems quite dry. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.
