Hi folks,
Seeking some advice on repairing some rotten joist ends. This is in the ground floor of a Victorian stone/rubble house. The joists are huge — 9x3" / 225x75mm. The wall has had significant damp which we're putting right, and the airbricks in the floor void have been covered up — I'm uncovering those as well to get the void ventilated.
I'm on a tight budget and need to do this myself. I was planning on doing something like this to replace the rotten ends:

...except I was going to overlap by more than he does, and I was going to use timber connectors between them instead of glue. My question is this: do I have to use the same size wood for the sister pieces? Seems like ridiculous overkill to have three lots of 9x3" side by side! Can I use smaller sizes to bolt the 9x3" joist ends together? Or can anyone suggest alternatives?
