Crumbling Brick Behind Fireplace After Removing

Hello. I had the fireplace removed in my house but the back wall bricks are in bad condition. The surface is crumbly around the area behind the opening, but seem to be ok higher up. Although the quick job would be just to cover it I want to ensure the structure is still strong it may make sense to replace these bricks as suggested by my plasterer.

Should I be concerned about this? I’ve lost about 2cm depth of the brick so far from it crumbling.

Are you planning on having a live fire in there? I think if so you had best either render the bricks with a solid ratio of cement or install acros and rebrick.

Let me know about the live flame. Do you have photos?

Hi Sam. Thank you very much for the reply. We wouldn’t have a live fire in there, thinking about potentially having a log burner down the line if it doesn’t had a huge amount of cost, but otherwise thinking of something more decorative if the cost for making the walls resistant to log burner heat is too high.

Thank you for the reply. I really appreciate the help.

Hi mate,

Look at the Fire Cement option. Render is all. It's hard to see without photos
