Unknown wall construction material in victorian terrace

Hi all,

We have just purchased and started renovating a victorian terrace and have started by removing some tired wallpaper.
We expected to find some type of plaster underneath but for the majority of the house the walls are covered in a dark grey concrete looking board. I have never seen this material before - does anyone know what it is!?

We are hoping to skim over it as it seems to be a fairly stable surface but just wanted to check first.

See pictures.

Thanks :)

Hi flemish4
You say it’s a board, be careful because it may be asbestos based.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look for a place to send a sample.
Having looked a bit closer I don't think it is a board because there are no seams it appears to be more like a concrete render? See image.

Hi flemish4
Yes it does look like a concrete render - that must be a relief.
