can my chimney be removed?

Ive just bought a house living room and kitchen open plan for some reason thr chimney seems to be in the centre but at an angle so the fire faces one way and the bloody thing takes up lots of room. It does not extend to the 1st floor tho. How can I tell if can be removed. ps its a terreced house. Please help I will not remove without getting a pro but would like to no if it may be possible :shock:

You need to check that the chimney isn't supporting anything, particularly more chimney all the way up to the roof - check which way the joists are going, look under the floorboards upstairs over the chimney's location to see if it is supporting them. It's all get-roundable if necessary with an RSJ. But absolutely do get a master builder or a structural engineer to have a look at it before you do anything.
