Is it worth restoring a rusty flagpole?

Hi everybody,

Apologies in advance if I am posting to the incorrect part of the forum.

So, approximately four years ago I moved into my home and at the weekend I took a look at my back garden and decided that I'd look to do some changes. There is a small gap at the side of my garage which I squeezed into which led to a small area, and to my surprise a flagpole. It's a static flagpole so there is no pin at the bottom in order to lower the pole.

As you can see the flagpole hasn't been looked after for years and is covered in rust.

I'm not sure whether it would be worth restoring, it wouldn't have been something that I would have installed myself. However, I think we're missing a bit more national pride.

How do you assess whether it has gone past the point of no return regarding the damage caused by the rust?

Can anyone recommend something to remove thick rust? I think it's too thick for a wire brush and have been looking at rust remover gels.

Thank you

Hi bigavo
Suggest you try using a centre punch the very bottom of the pole to check it’s integrity before you try renovations.
