rendering over existing masonery paint

we are currently renovating/extending a 50's bungalow and the existing exterior brickwork is painted with some kind of masonary paint. do we need to remove this or can just "scrabble" it to form a "key" of do we just use a bonding slurry

you need to remove as much paint as possible then paint a pva solution on the walls with a hand full of sand mixed in,when dried the sand will give a bit of grip.
