Hi!

I am in the process of building a brick fireplace in my bungalow to hold a woodburning stove. I would like to use a railway sleeper as a mantle shelf, does anyone know if it will need fireproofing or not. I want to use a new oak sleeper if possible, the timber will be about 2 feet (60CM) above the stove and 14 inches (35cm) forward of the flue. Any advice will be appreciated

russellfl,
Provided the mantelshelf is outside the hearth recess you should be OK.
You should not use timber as a lintol for the hearth opening.
