We have removed the lintel from our chimney (what was a peice of wooden door frame or similar). Do we need to replace it with proper lintel? I would really appreciate some advice on this matter. I have picture of chimney if needed.

lyons,
If you are referring to the chimney hearth opening if the bricks above are laid flat you should fit a heavy metal flat to stablise the opening.

Thanks - yes flat bricks. How thick does the metal flat need to be - will 20 - 25 mm suffice? And as we are installing a wood stove (the other question you replied to) - will it be ok to have metal lintel above?

lyons,
Aim for something about 75mm wide and 6mm thick, the metal will be unaffected by the stove.
