Blocking an upstairs fireplace

I have a fireplace in the bedroom of my house and I want to fill it in and decorate over it.
The fireplace in the living room below is still in use with an open fire.
I'm assuming the two fireplaces are connected somehow.

What should I use to block the hole, and will I need an air brick if the downstairs hearth is still open and in use?

Tangler,
"What should I use to block the hole" aerated concrete blocks.
"will I need an air brick " yes.
