Converting disused fireplace to wardrobe

Hi everyone, I have a blocked up disused fireplace in a 1960s ex LA house and wondered if it's possible to open up the back to create a built in wardrobe in the bedroom behind. I realise I will need lintels to support the load but wondered how to insert temporary supports when I have access to one side of the wall only (the other side being inside the fireplace itself). Once the brickwork is supported I would then plan to line the interior with studs/panels so I could leave ventilation in place from the old fireplace opening vent. By fitting a suitable vent cowl can I assume this would provide a weatherproof seal ? Any suggestions/ideas/comments welcome with thanks.
