Chimney Stability Concern After Removing Render

I have an old chimney breast in my utility room and I have chipped off all the render coating to give it a more natural look however the condition of the bricks is appalling-some are crumbled and broken, some are spalled and soft.Im worried I may have affected the stability of the chimney by removing the rendering? Chimney is about 20 ft high in total and Im beginning to wonder if the rendering was holding it together! Any advice please? Thanks.

its highly unlikely, as the breasting will be double thick brick, but if your so conserned then contact a local builder for clarification
