Removing Tiles on Outside Gable Wall so that the Whole Wall can be Rendered

Hi can anyone advise please?
I have a 1970s bungalow that has a gable that has been half tiled, the other half has been rendered. it is above a large window in a bungalow. I want to remove the tiles and have the whole gable rendered. I have just removed a few tiles to see what was underneath, expecting to find an un-rendered wall. What I found was the tiles were attached to laths with a felt barrier underneath them (no wall). Any ideas how to proceed, can I put in a lintel 8ffet long spanning the window and then use thermalite blocks on top, or is there a simpler way?
Cheers
