Solid Wall Brick Replacement and Removing Masonry Paint

by Reck » Mon Sep 05, 2016 11:38 am

Hi,

I've just bought a terrace that is mostly of cavity wall construction, however the rear wall of the kitchen (outrigger) is of solid construction with 'stretchers' and 'headers' of the 'flemish bond' type.

The wall is currently covered in about 4 layers of masonry paint. I started to remove this using an arbor disc, but quickly found that some of the brick faces had blown as the paint fell off in sheets in some places, with red crumbly brick behind.

In addition, there appears to be damp patches on the interior wall of the kitchen.

I have two questions;

1. What's the best way for me to continue removing this horrible paint, without damaging the bricks excessively?

2. Once I've done the above, I can identify which bricks need replacing... However, all the tutorials I've looked at deal with replacing single bricks in a cavity wall.

2a. Can anyone tell me how the process differs for a flemish bond wall? Will the rear face of the brick be mortared to the brick behind it?

2b. What if one of the header bricks needs replacing - do I just use the same process, except drill twice as deep? Concerned that I might end up ripping away some of the internal plaster in this case.

Many thanks in advance.
