Brick Chimney Removed but how to Seal it up?

Hello

I have removed an internal brick chimney in my bathroom. I can now see the exposed blackened bricks of the flue. I am aware that the soot contains salts that absorb moisture. What would be a good way to completely seal up this flue - while at the same time stopping the soot stained bricks from causing trouble? I only need to seal up to the bathroom ceiling because I have removed the rest of the chimney stack. The bricks are on a lime mortar. Thank you

clean the bricks off as best you can, then paint a pva solution on the wall, and plaster it with limelight renovating plaster.
