Brick crumbling and slight leak when after heavy rain

Hi all,
Problem with chimney stack last year, and quite a wet chimney breast in the loft just on one side.
We had a roofer out and he flaunched the chimney, put some covers on the chimney to stop rain coming down through chimney and re-pointed some of the stack, he also tagged a couple of slates but the roof was in very good condition. This seemed to sort the problem out for a while but a small drip occurs after heavy rainfall.
i went into the loft and found that the brick on the chimney stack is crumbling (as it was last year, just one side of the house) and the mortar is dry and loose. There are a couple of bricks missing also!
I have read about salting, is this the cause?
I did read that if you have a problem with your chimney you should get a chimney specialist and not a roofer!
Any advice would be welcome. I have a video of the loft and chimney but unsure if if will upload on here. will try though
Many thanks in advance
