I have a single skin brick porch and the brickwork is crubling below the damp proof membrane. It looks like the previous owner has tried, badly, to render this with a poor cement mix. I too would like to render this, but properly. What is the correct mix and what is the best way to stabilise the brickwork before applying it? :?

Apply a water proofer onto the brickwork,like bitumin, give it 3 0r 4 coats then on the last coat throw sand onto it to give a hold for the render.
Mix 1 part cement , 1 part lime, and 5 parts sharp sand,apply first scatch coat then leave over night , then apply same mix of render as a top coat and float up .
If you use lime add a waterproofer to the mix, if you use a plasticiser DO NOT mix with a water proofer
