Determining What Mortar Mix to use for Repointing Brickwork

My house was built around the end of the 1800s or maybe 1900 I want to repoint the outside and I see there is lots of stuff on the internet about using cement, cement and lime or just lime and the damage it can do if you get it wrong. Is there any safe mix if you are not sure what you are dealing with, or how can you determine which mortar mix to use.
