Removing Wall Under Stairs to fit Desk

I would like advice on removing a wall under the stairs.
This forms a small storage area but I want to open it up so as to have a desk in there.
How do I establish whether it is safe to do and will the stairs be OK without the wall?
I've not been under the floor to see if there is a corresponding wall below.
