Lifespan of Rendering Breezeblock Garden Wall

I have several long garden walls composed of painted breezeblock which are pretty ugly. I was planning to get them rendered and then painted. However I am concerned the render might have a short life because they are retaining soil and pretty exposed to weather. Am I right to be concerned and if so are there any alternatives to rendering?
