Brick frost damage causing bricks to wash away?

Hi all,

Several bricks in one part of our Victorian house are crumbling. If water hits them it washes the brick away, it's rather worrying!

Is this ice/frost damage? What can I do to sort the issue. Is it a big problem?

Thanks,

Rich

Hi richjturner
The problem is caused by frost action on damp in the bricks. You need to determine where the damp is coming from. On the bricks just above the rendering this is probably rising damp, so you need to find out if there is a dampproof course. In a Victorian house this is likely to be a layer of slate.
