Footing and border

Hey guys,
So I'm trying to finish off my path and driveway where it joins up to a public tarmac path.
I am going to have to do a little bit of tarmac repair to the public path where I lifted the old driveway up and this was concreated (it looked a mess).
So here's my question. I need some kind of footing to push the tarmac up against and on the other side will be my chippings as part of my step. You may know what I mean when I say I was going to use something like a patio slab turned on its edge to create a footing and straight line and border .
Is this what is used, patio slabs on their side or is there something specific to hold the tarmac and for it to go up against to separate from the other side?
Thanks (Ps I can't upload photos because of this bloody phone)
