Have a couple of oil stones which I use to sharpen kitchen knives and chisels with. The oilstones always seem to wear unevenly, leaving a slight hollow along the middle, lengthways.
This causes a problem when sharpening a wide blade chisel or even more so with a plane blade.

Is this due to a poor sharpening technique or just natural wear ? I know that the oilstones are cheap to buy but they never seem to wear out in terms of their thickness. Is there a way that they can be resurfaced to provide a flat and even sharpening surface once again or are they just fit for scrap ?

i have teh same problem,so i assumed it was poor technique


if you have two stones of a similar size, rub them together and they will become flat, boring and time consuming.

have two stones, one for large blades which will remain flatish and one for smaller blades, therefore does not matter if it hollows slightly
