Hello All.

My house was built in 1992 with the upper storey in the roof space designed from the outset as a hobby / playroom and was fully compliant with building regs at time of build apart from having a drop down ladder instead of standard stairs. I now wish to convert this area into a habitable by fitting standard stairs which I understand will invoke current BR. The current insulation in the roof is 150mm fibre insulation between the rafters and over boarded with skimmed 9mm plasterboard. The questions are: will I have to upgrade to current BR insulation requirements, if so can I add something like Kingspan over the existing plaster boarded ceiling, and what thickness would be required.

you will need to upgrade the insulation, How thick will be up to the Building inspector, its best if you contact him at your local council
