Small Boards Nailed to Adjacent Loft Joists

Hi Everyone,
I've got a question about some small random boards in my loft as I am unsure what they are for.
I've noticed small boards nailed to adjacent loft joists in my loft. I have no idea what they are for. I assume they might be there so people have somewhere for their feet when working in the loft. They don't look like they have any structural functions but I prefer to ask as I am not a builder or roofer.
Is it safe for me to remove them as it would make it easier for me to put some floor boards down so I can store some light items such as suitcases.
