Hi, thinking about converting my loft. my roof is the original build up and from inside the current loft i can see the rafters, batten and back of the tiles. If i want to convert the loft to a bedroom will i have to strip the whole roof off and relay with a breather membrane in the correct build up? Or is there a way to retain the roof as existing and insulate from inside?
I only intent to put a small dormer on the back so it would be a lot of work if i have to strip the whole roof off!

Hi john woodcock,
I see no reason why you should not line the existing roof with breathable membrane (starting at the top) then reinforce the structure under this and fit insulation between and under the new rafters. You would have to devise a way of taking the membrane into the gutters at the lower end.
Suggest you discuss this with the Building Inspector at the plans stage.
