Wooden batten for curtain rail

by abctc » Sat Jan 13, 2024 9:50 am

Hello

When drilling holes in the wooden batten for the curtain rail brackets, the batten became detached from the wall at one end. After drilling an extra hole at this end the batten remains detached despite the bracket screw being fully screwed in.

Will drilling a larger hole for a bigger, longer screw close the batten back to the wall?

Thank you in advance for any replies

Hi abctc,
The batten is there because the wall is not man enough for fixing curtain brackets direct. You will have to use new screws through the batten and into the wall using appropriate wall fixings, you could put these new fixings under where the curtain brackets will be located but it’s likely you will need numerous fixings.

Thank you Stoneboy for your reply.

What are 'appropriate wall fixings'? I'm a complete DIY novice.

Hi abctc,
Drill through the batten using a wood drill where you want it fixed back, change to a masonry drill and drill into the wall behind.
1…If the drill goes in easily for a short distance you probably have dry lined walls. If this is the case drive a plastic wall plug into the hole and put a screw in. Pump a water based grab adhesive between the wall and the batten before you screw it back.
2…. If the drill goes in easily but continues to drill into material you probably have aerated concrete blocks behind the batten. Fix as in 1.
3…. If the drill goes in but then gets difficult to go deeper you may have a concrete lintel above the window, ideally drill into the concrete then fix as in 1.
Hope that helps.
