1970s House - Kitchen Ceiling Light Wiring Ask questions and find answers to many subjects relating to electrics and electrical work

Hi,

I am new to DIY - replacing the old kitchen light with a new one.

I made the fatal error of not snapping a pic of the light fixture wiring set up before I removed it, now scratching my head to understand how to fix the new fixture.. So before I cave & call a sparky wondered whether anyone can help.

My house is 1970s UK, so old school wiring system...

I have 2 red wires combined into a white plastic box (I think this indicates the light is the last in the circuit) a green wire, which is neutral, & 2 black wires I assume one goes to the switch the other powers the light.

The kitchen is on a 2 switch system.

Any tips on how to install would be greatly received.

Likely green is earth, the two reds connect together but not to the light, and one black is line the other black is neutral, in many lamps it does not matter if line and neutral swapped, however with screw bulbs line should go to centre pin, and neutral to the screw.

To work out which is line and which is neutral will need test equipment, but in the main it will work if wrong way around.
