2 x 10mm twe to boost load on one sola circuit.

by collectors » Fri Sep 05, 2025 11:34 am

I have a situation on having 1 x 6kw solar inverter that has a 10mm twe feeding it as a mains supply. We are fitting a second inverter in parallel to give around 12kw. This would be pushing a 10mm cable & should be upped to 16mm. I do have enough spare 10mm cable to double up. Is this ok to do? & labelled up appropriately as its not dissimilar to a ring main & this is to help with voltage & amperage. .
In this situation i would have 2 x 10mm TWE's from the same 50amp mcb to a local 60amp switch & tails up to each inverter.
I know, not really correct, but trying to save some cash.

Because smaller gauge cables are easier to bend, I have often run two cables in parallel rather than use one larger cable, although a bit more than 10 mm sq. They will need to be same length to share the load, but no reason for not running in parallel.

There are a lot of rules to follow, putting "parallel" in a word search with the regulations produces a lot of hits, but most are common sense.

Hi,i will run the inverters separately. To give some more insight i have 3 fuse boards for the whole house. 1 board for a self contained area that i live in & 2 other boards for the rest of the house, where i have 3 lodgers.
I will use the 2nd board for most of the rest of the house & the other 3rd board for 2 feeds to the inverters, 1 electric hob & 1 electric shower. Over the next few months we will install a pressurised direct hot water tank so we can do away with the 10.5kw shower. & the hob will get changed for a 2kw induction 2 ring hob, doing away with the 6kw hob. So will be good in the end. "We hope"

Be careful with the safety and efficiency of the setup. Doubling up the 10mm cables could work in theory, but you need to make sure the cable is rated for the total current. If you're pushing near the limit of the 50amp MCB, it might not be ideal to share the load between cables, as it can cause uneven current distribution.
Labeling everything properly is a good start, but I’d still recommend checking whether the 10mm cables are truly adequate for the increased power, and maybe look into a better solution if possible, just to avoid potential overloading or safety issues down the line.

Thanks for the info everyone. we disided to not run the inverters in parelel & make them individuals & have a jigle around with the 2 boards they will be feeding. In the very near future we will be fitting direct presurised hot water tank so we can do away with the 10.5kw shower & use the emersion saving 7.5kw plus a revamp with the kitchen hob to a two ring induction. That will drop another 5kw.
