Hi,
Can anyone out there help?
We have white-coated aluminim window frames - we believe ill-fitted ones due to the amount of condensation we get on them throughout the winter. We do not wish to replace them as we are not planning on staying here long.
When we first moved in about 3 years back, we cleaned up all the windows and resiliconed them. But mould started to appear on the silicone. We assumed we hadn't used a good enough sealant so last year removed it all and resiliconed using an anti-mould frame sealant.
However, again during last winter, mould re-appeared - some on top of the actual sealant, but some appeared to be coming through from behind the sealant too..?! On one window, we used an external sealant as a trial which seemed to do the trick though remained tacky (and has been a real pig to remove as it was sooo sticky!) and eventually grew some mould on top!
Downstairs, we have a upvc window and french doors, and the mould appeared to be growing on top of the sealant. In fact, it seemed that whereever we had silicone, mould grew!
So, after trying two or three different types and brands now, we wondered if anyone could recommend a very good silicone suitable for aluminium window frames (in white) - and one for upvc if it needs to be different - that doesn't end up mouldy?!
Really appreciate your help as we've just removed all the old stuff again (using silicone eater to make sure every last bit of residue is removed) so need to get it redone asap - especially if this cold weather and rain decides to continue!! :(
Many thanks! :D
