A putty question

by Palstave » Sat Jan 24, 2026 11:45 pm

Hi there, new member here.
I am about to rub down and undercoat a sash window. All the putty needs to be replaced. My question is, once I have removed the old putty is it recommended to undercoat the wood where the putty initially sat? Will the new putty adhere to the new;y applied undercoat?

I know this is a rooky question, but I guess we all have to start somewhere.

Thanks in advance!

Hi palstave,
In removing the old putty you will probably expose areas of bare timber. Paint these with an oil based primer/undercoat and allow this to dry before you add new putty - I assume you will be using oil based putty.
