Advice Wanted for DIY Bathroom Renovation

by JOEG » Sun May 26, 2019 4:56 pm

Hi Everyone,

I'm quite new to DIY but I work in construction (office job) so I have a decent enough knowledge of how things go together.

I bought a house last year and I need to renovate the bathroom. To save money I'm looking to do it myself.

I'm just trying to plan some of the jobs which need doing. The house is a late 19th c terrace house, In the bathroom there is a timber board ceiling (I assume from the 80's - looks quite dated. The walls are plaster on brick to two walls, and the other two are partitions - with I assume plasterboard.

There is timber skirting to part of the bathroom. It has slate tiles on the floor and ceramic on the walls.

My plan was to remove the ceiling (which is a suspended/ false ceiling with a loft access hatch in. Remove the plaster from the walls (it is slightly uneven), remove the floor tiles, take off the plasterboard from the two partition walls (I imagine the tiles will pull the plasterboard off and I need to access the shower pipes/ electrics).

I would use tile backer board for the whole bathroom as I assume it is easier and cheaper than trying to do little bits with plasterboard. For the floor I was thinking I will put down timber sheet and then put the tiles down on this.

I was wondering if anyone can give me some tips for the work. Where is the best place to buy the materials? I know B and Q sells materials but it will end up being quite expensive.

At the moment the pipework is a bit of a mess - whoever did the original bathroom has set up all this ugly timber trunking to take the pipes around the bathroom which looks awful. Where is the best place to find information on plumbing. Plastic pipes seem to be the best option these days. Are the push fit connectors pretty reliable?

As it is a small bathroom I wanted to fit a pocket door, which will run into the partition. Again does anyone have any recommendations for this.

What is the best type of shower - the shower at the moment is an old electric one. I think the coil for the solenoid valve is broken as there is no water at all. I figured while I am renovating the bathroom I would replace it. Is an electric shower the best option as the water pressure was not very good when it was working.

Thanks for any help and tips, and pointing me in the right direction for some reading.
